While developing our new TakItWithMe Google My Maps to GPS service, we ran across a great Google My Map of the Trent Severn Waterway produced by TheWaterway.ca. The Trent Severn waterway links eastern Lake Ontario with Lake Huron via Georgian Bay. The route is 240 miles long, includes 44 locks (many of them quite unique), and travels via rivers, lakes, and canals. In all, it took over 75 years to build – starting in 1833 and completing in 1920.
The Trent Severn My Map does a great job showing the route through the system and highlighting each of the locks. Lock descriptions include pictures, miles numbers, lift height, and lock operator phone numbers – making this a handy guide. The great thing about Google My Maps is that they can be viewed both in the 2D Google Maps system and in Google Earth. To view, here is the Google Maps Link or you can use this Google Earth Link.
If you’re going to be cruising the waterway, you can use TakItWithMe to transfer the routes and locks to your GPS (understanding that this map is not intended for navigation and should on be used as a reference). TheWaterway.ca did a detailed job with the routes, so you may find it better to upload the routes individually via the GE2GPS utility rather than all at once using the My Map utility. If you’re mainly interested in the locks, turn off line uploading in the conversion options.
