I would very much appreciate some assistance with a project I am working on.
I have a website which aggregates cruisecams from cruising ships (http://ShipWatcher.com) - I’d like to get an accurate and up to date feed of data for their loations (lat / long).
I understand NOAA provides this via their VOS system but the problem is that they strip the ships call-sign out of the data, so I don’t know how to link a ship to the location as recorded in VOS.
Can anyone point me to a resource which will provide accurate and up to date info about ship locations please?
My web site is non-commercial, so I don’t have a wad of cash to hand over, unfortunately
Neil,
EarthNC is certainly interested in building dynamic maps such as cruise ship webcams and locations.
You are correct that getting live ship positions is difficult (at least from any known public source). The best source is via AIS when ships are near shore, but of course this depends on having a shore station connected to the internet within range. We are working to obtain more AIS partners to give us such coastal coverage, but it is a work in progress.
I’ll e-mail you directly to discuss possibilities.
