First, I’m disappointed with your return policy. Delorme has a 30 day no fee return policy and I was hoping that Google Earth would be the same. I have tried a lot of GPS Systems and the majority have been extremely dissapointing for one reason or another, thus I’m not optimistic that yours will be any better and that is why I am leary of spending $25-$30 (restocking fee) just to try it out.
I would like to use the EarthNC Plus/GPS Bundle as a supplement to the Garmin 430S that I am currently using. Using EarthNC plus would be an inexpensive way (using with notebook pc) to get onboard large screen GPS tracking and depth information compared to $1000s for large screen nautical chartplotters.
I have some questions;
1) Can I get a real sample of Lake St Clair (Great Lakes) Depth data provided in this pkg. I have GE Online w/Lk St. Clair and the depth data is sparse. I really don’t want to spend $25 to find out that the depth data is inadequate. I have already looked at your samples.
2) With the GPS, I will be using EarthNC+ Offline only and would like to use it on both the Great Lakes and Michigan Inland Lakes. I understand there are no NOAA charts for the inland lakes but would I still get GPS tracking over the Sat View of the selected Lake and surrounding land area?
3) Given that I will be Offline when boating, how do I select what data to store locally (on PC HD) while online?
3a) How much area does the 2gb selection limit cover?
3b) How much detail will be available? Zoom Level?
3c) I read that only 2gb of map data can be selected/stored, can I not just use multiple folders for different areas?
4) Is there any plan to provide Inland Lake data? Garmin and other companies already have that data.
Any additional information on the ENC Chart/GPS bundle would be appreciated, any manuals, links, etc.

Mike,
Thanks for your post. The restocking fee would only apply to the USB GPS sold as part of the bundle and would be limited to $12. You would also be welcome to return only the EarthNC software for full refund and keep the GPS for use with other programs (as a standard NMEA compliant GPS, it will work with most other systems).

To your additional questions:
1. You can view a screen shot of the north end of Lake St Clair HERE. Depths are shown by the shaded numbers (in feet). Depth information is sourced from the official navigation charts and has the same density.
2. You are correct, while you would not have charting for inland lakes, the GPS tracking / satellite view will still work.
3. Data stored is based on where you have most recently ‘explored’ in Google Earth, including to what zoom level. In basic terms, if you ‘preview’ your boating trip while connected, Google Earth will automatically save those areas to the local cache.
3a). Coverage area depends on the zoom level and image resolution, but 2GB is generally more than sufficient for a full day of boating and often more.
3b). This is based on the level of zoom used while ‘previewing’. The closer you zoom into an area and allow it to load, the more detail it will have offline (and also the more storage required).
3c). We have an article in our Google Earth Tips and Tricks Forum about how to make multiple cache files.
4.) We are always working to expand our coverage. Obtaining inland lake data takes time as it is often held by local governments or private organizations.

It sounds like you have explored the website well. The EarthNC bundle is a combination of our EEarthNC Plus Vector Charting, EarthNC Raster Charting, with the addition of a NMEA compliant USB Globalsat GPS and GooPs Pro GPS to Google Earth software.

Please let us know if you have other questions.

Thanks for the quick reply! The info you supplied has convinced me of the value of EarthNC+ and I will be ordering it shortly. I also considered the Delorme LT-20 but could not get my questions answered and it appears oriented solely to land based operation.
